In recent years, liberal arts programs worldwide have faced numerous challenges. Many universities, both abroad and in China, have cut or merged liberal arts programs. Between 2019 and 2022, 1,422 liberal arts programs were eliminated in China alone. The main reason for this trend is the imbalance between supply and demand. The rapid expansion of university enrollment has led to a surge in the number of liberal arts graduates, while market demand has not kept pace. As a result, liberal arts graduates face intense competition in the job market, which has led universities to reduce their investment in liberal arts programs.
Despite these challenges, liberal arts education remains invaluable and irreplaceable in human civilization. It not only imparts knowledge of literature, history, and philosophy but also shapes and elevates the human spirit, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and humanitarian concerns essential for modern society.
In the face of technological upheaval, liberal arts education is not without a future. The development of AI and other new technologies has created a pressing need for liberal arts talent, capable of addressing the risks and challenges brought by these technologies and regulating social organization, cultural institutions, and more. Moreover, the growing dominance of the service industry has increased demand for liberal arts and social science professionals.
Therefore, the global decline of liberal arts programs is not a death knell but a call for reflection on liberal arts education. We must reassess the value and positioning of liberal arts education, promote interdisciplinary integration, and cultivate comprehensive liberal arts talent to address future challenges and drive human civilization forward.
